Assistant Controller

Overview:

A growth-oriented insurance organization is seeking an Assistant Controller to support the overall leadership of accounting operations and ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all financial activities. This role oversees day-to-day accounting processes, supports strategic financial initiatives, and partners closely with executive leadership, auditors, actuaries, and internal teams. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, operational leadership ability, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Operating on a Hybrid schedule in Raleigh, NC.


Skills and Experience

  • Ten or more years of progressive accounting experience, including oversight of accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls.

  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP, Statutory accounting principles, NAIC reporting requirements, and regulatory compliance.

  • Proven experience managing general ledger processes, financial statement preparation, budgeting, and investment reporting.

  • Proficiency with financial software, process management, audit coordination, and performance management.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA required. MBA is a plus.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, develop policies, and support strategic decision making.


Job Description

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance across all financial data.

  • Maintain and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

  • Lead general ledger reconciliations and support timely preparation of monthly GAAP and Statutory financial statements.

  • Assist with NAIC quarterly and annual statement preparation and related regulatory reporting.

  • Support cash management and investment activities to optimize returns and manage risk.

  • Contribute to budgeting and forecasting through data analysis and financial consolidation.

  • Prepare required tax filings and ensure compliance with federal, state, and regulatory standards.

  • Maintain asset and depreciation schedules and related documentation.

  • Coordinate with actuaries, auditors, and consultants to provide accurate financial information.

  • Assist with HR and payroll tasks and participate in cross training within the accounting team.

  • Support special projects, process improvements, and key initiatives within the finance function.

  • Serve as a primary support resource for the CFO and provide back-up coverage for essential accounting functions.
