Position Summary

The AVP, Accounting Policy will play a critical role in supporting the continued growth and increasing complexity of the organization as the finance function undergoes ongoing transformation. This role serves as the primary technical accounting authority, responsible for researching, interpreting, and applying current and emerging accounting guidance across the organization.

The position will provide leadership on complex accounting matters, new transactions, and implementation of new accounting standards, while ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP, U.S. Statutory accounting, and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. The AVP will also support the preparation and review of U.S. GAAP and Statutory financial statements and collaborate closely with cross-functional finance and business partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research, analysis, and documentation of technical accounting and financial reporting matters related to complex transactions, new business initiatives, acquisitions, and contracts

  • Partner with entity and divisional controllers, as well as investment accounting, tax, actuarial, and other finance teams to ensure accurate and consistent accounting application

  • Evaluate, interpret, and lead implementation efforts for new and emerging accounting standards under U.S. GAAP and U.S. Statutory accounting

  • Monitor regulatory and industry developments and assess financial and operational impacts, including NAIC-related updates impacting statutory reporting

  • Represent the organization in external industry forums and accounting committees as appropriate

  • Support quarterly and annual financial reporting processes, including U.S. GAAP consolidated financial statements

  • Assist with preparation and review of external financial filings and disclosures

  • Serve as a key liaison with internal and external auditors, supporting audit planning and execution

  • Collaborate on finance transformation initiatives, special projects, and cross-functional efforts as assigned

  • Develop and deliver technical accounting training and guidance to finance leadership and broader stakeholder groups

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience

  • Prior experience in a technical accounting or accounting policy role strongly preferred

  • Big Four public accounting experience, or a combination of public accounting and industry experience

  • Required experience in life insurance and reinsurance accounting

  • Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP technical accounting, including ASC 944, ASC 805, ASC 810, ASC 323, ASC 820, as well as CECL and LDTI

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. Statutory accounting, including SSAP 26, 43, 51, 56, 61, and 86

  • Proven ability to research, interpret, and document complex accounting guidance and translate it into clear accounting policies

  • Proactive, self-directed professional with the ability to manage priorities independently in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong consultative and advisory skills with the ability to build effective relationships across finance and business teams

  • Experience supporting accounting standard implementations and special projects preferred

  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills

  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and risk-based thinking

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond effectively to new challenges

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex accounting topics to diverse audiences

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with accounting systems and tools (e.g., BlackLine, NetSuite, Workiva) is a plus

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required

  • CPA designation required
