PRODUCT COUNSEL – INSURANCE <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our client, a fast growing and dynamic insurance carrier and its affiliated general agent, are on a mission to deliver affordable speciality auto coverage to drivers without compromising outstanding service. As such, they are seeking a specialized and knowledgeable Product Counsel to join their leading business. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

POSITION SUMMARY<\/strong><\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

This role is a critical partner to various business units; the Product Counsel will serve as a legal advisor on product development and strategy and insurance regulatory and compliance issues. The incumbent will be responsible for advising the underwriting and product teams on rate, rule and form matters, developing and drafting contract language for coverage enhancements, endorsements, and training the business on legal and regulatory developments and trends in further promotion of a culture of compliance and innovation. The incumbent will be the primary legal counsel for form and rule development, as well as conducting legal review of underwriting guidelines and standards. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

DUTIES<\/strong><\/span>:<\/strong> <\/p>\n

    \n
  • Develop and draft contract language for policies, coverage enhancements and endorsements for non-standard personal private auto programs across several states.<\/li>\n
  • Analyze, organize, and effectively distribute information on insurance industry developments, including department of insurance bulletins, enacted legislation, and other information issued by regulatory and non-regulatory authorities such as the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA).<\/li>\n
  • Proactively identify and solve regulatory and compliance risks.<\/li>\n
  • Regularly monitor and assess areas of company operations to assess and ensure proper regulatory compliance.<\/li>\n
  • Review, revise and test compliance in accordance with regulatory expectations and best practices.<\/li>\n
  • Lead efforts to manage, develop, implement, and direct changes required by regulatory and insurance industry authorities.<\/li>\n
  • Research and respond to questions internal business units concerning regulations, legislation, insurance department policies and positions, and other compliance-related issues.<\/li>\n
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance of product and coverage related marketing materials by reviewing and approving prior to use.<\/li>\n
  • Provide comprehensive legal review of underwriting guidelines.<\/li>\n
  • Coordinate with product development teams to ensure that state-specific issues are addressed for new and existing lines of business and assist with product filings.<\/li>\n
  • Verify that all corporate regulatory policies and procedures affecting all lines of business have been properly documented, implemented, and communicated to relevant internal and external parties.<\/li>\n
  • Prepare opinions and other memoranda as requested.<\/li>\n
  • Perform all other duties as assigned. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    SKILL AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
    \n
      \n
    • Juris Doctor (JD)<\/strong> from an accredited law school.<\/li>\n
    • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, California strongly preferred.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • In-house experience with an auto insurance carrier is strongly preferred.<\/li>\n
    • 7-10 y<\/strong>ears of legal experience in personal automobile products.<\/li>\n
    • Strong understanding of personal auto insurance products and state regulatory frameworks.<\/li>\n
    • Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.<\/li>\n
    • Robust analytical abilities and excellent judgment, a pragmatic approach to problem solving, flexibility to adapt and thrive in an environment that is constantly changing, and the ability to make smart decisions in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information.<\/li>\n
    • Self-directed, solution-focused individual who has a strong work ethic, strong business acumen, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to achieve enterprise-wide results.<\/li>\n
    • Skilled attention to detail and organization required.<\/li>\n
    • Ability to prioritize and complete time-sensitive projects on time.<\/li>\n

The majority of their business sits within Term Life, alongside A&H, with further growth and product expansion actively being explored.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting directly to the CFO, this individual will take ownership of <strong>budgeting, forecasting and corporate planning<\/strong>, working closely with senior stakeholders across the organization.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>This is very much a <strong>working manager<\/strong> position. They need someone who can own and drive the FP&A process while remaining hands-on with the detail.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Own budgeting, forecasting and corporate planning<\/li>\n<li>Partner with the CFO and senior leaders across the business<\/li>\n<li>Produce financial analysis to support strategic decision-making<\/li>\n<li>Improve existing planning and forecasting processes<\/li>\n<li>Take proactive ownership of the FP&A function and drive the process forward<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are looking for someone with <strong>10+ years of FP&A \/ Corporate Finance experience<\/strong> who has previously owned a budgeting and forecasting process.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance experience would be preferred, particularly <strong>Life Insurance<\/strong>, although P&C, Health and broader Financial Services backgrounds will be considered.<\/p>\n<p>The key is someone who is proactive, comfortable taking ownership and capable of operating in a hands-on environment.<\/p>\n<p>Experience with <strong>Prophix<\/strong> would be beneficial but isn’t essential.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Consider It?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a newly created position within a finance team of approximately 13 people and provides significant exposure directly to the CFO. Building and maintaining Excel financial models, cash flow projections, and sensitivity analyses. Writing deal memos and credit packages for internal approval. Managing the full loan lifecycle from initial underwriting through legal documentation and closing coordination. Preparing and maintaining legal checklists and working directly with external counsel. Liaising with borrowers, brokers, appraisers, and third party service providers throughout the deal process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>What we are looking for<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">3 to 5 years of commercial real estate underwriting experience. Background in CMBS underwriting at a bank, rating agency, or outsourced underwriting firm strongly preferred. Strong Excel modelling skills are non-negotiable. Experience writing deal memos and credit submissions. Familiarity with the full loan lifecycle from application through closing.
