A&H Counsel – NYC, NJ, GA, or IL<\/h1>\n

Our client, a prominent leader in the Insurance industry, is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Legal Counsel specializing in Accident and Health (A&H) to join their robust legal department. This is a permanent position offering the successful candidate an opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment, driving legal strategies and solutions that contribute to the company’s business goals and regulatory compliance.<\/p>\n

Role and Responsibilities<\/h2>\n
    \n
  • Embedded Legal Business Partner<\/li>\n
      \n
    • Serve as a true business-facing insurance generalist<\/strong>, deeply embedded with the A&H business.<\/li>\n
    • Build strong relationships with senior business stakeholders across multiple locations and functions.<\/li>\n
    • Participate directly in business discussions, provide legal opinions, engage in open dialogue, and serve as a trusted legal partner advising in the best interests of the company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    • Regulatory Matters & Regulator Interaction\n
        \n
      • Handle a broad range of practical, business-facing insurance regulatory matters and identify and advise on regulatory exposure.<\/li>\n
      • Manage regulatory correspondence and interact directly with insurance regulators and other applicable regulatory bodies.<\/li>\n
      • Facilitate and manage legal entity fraud training and associated reporting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Insurance & Commercial Contracting<\/li>\n
          \n
        • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial and insurance-related agreements, including NDAs and amendments to business agreements and schedules.<\/li>\n
        • Support agreements involving vendors, delegated authority arrangements, MGUs\/MGAs, TPAs, and other insurance business relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        • Product & Claims-Related Matters & Business Support<\/li>\n
            \n
          • Advise the business on claims-related issues, including the application of specific state laws and regulations to particular products or claims.<\/li>\n
          • Draft and provide legal guidance on benefit clarifications and related claims communications.<\/li>\n
          • Support policies, insurance products, and broader product-related matters.<\/li>\n
          • Advise on advertising, consumer product issues, and other legal matters arising from the A&H business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n

            Qualifications<\/h2>\n
              \n
            • J.D. and Bar Admission to at least one U.S. state<\/strong><\/li>\n
            • 3-5+ years of dedicated A&H, Travel, Pet, Stop Loss, and more P&C Insurance lines<\/li>\n
            • Wider P&C insurance experience within regulatory, claims, product, corporate insurance, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Dynamics 365 and the wider Microsoft ecosystem at the heart of the new environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The main focus of the role will be making sure the new platform is properly set up and ready to move into live BAU service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">You’ll be working across the programme, IT Service Management, technology teams and suppliers to put the right support model in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>You’ll be involved in:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Defining L1\/L2\/L3 support and escalation routes<\/li>\n<li>Agreeing support hours, SLAs and supplier responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Making sure monitoring and operational processes are in place<\/li>\n<li>Planning knowledge transfer from the programme into BAU<\/li>\n<li>Supporting go-live, early life support and the move into steady-state<\/li>\n<li>Defining what capability needs to remain in-house<\/li>\n<li>Working with suppliers around handover and transition<\/li>\n<li>Making sure the service is genuinely ready to operate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>What I’m looking for:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Strong experience in Service Design and\/or Service Transition<\/li>\n<li>Experience taking a major platform or transformation into BAU<\/li>\n<li>Good understanding of ITSM \/ ITIL<\/li>\n<li>Experience working with managed service providers and suppliers<\/li>\n<li>Strong stakeholder management skills<\/li>\n<li>Dynamics 365 \/ Power Platform experience would be a The successful candidate will advise business stakeholders and serve as a key legal resource on matters supporting group health and life insurance operations.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Responsibilities<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Serve as a primary legal resource for ERISA and employee benefits matters.<\/li>\n<li>Advise internal business partners on employee benefits and group health and life insurance issues.<\/li>\n<li>Provide practical legal guidance supporting insurance operations.<\/li>\n<li>Support matters involving insurance policy forms, agent agreements, and operational contracts.<\/li>\n<li>Partner with underwriting and other business teams on legal and regulatory considerations.<\/li>\n<li>Translate complex ERISA and benefits requirements into practical business advice.<\/li>\n<li>Support corporate transactions and M&A matters as needed; transactional work will be an occasional component rather than a primary responsibility.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with the broader legal team and business leadership on strategic and operational matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Qualifications<\/h2>\n<h3>Required<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Juris Doctor (JD).<\/li>\n<li>Strong experience in <strong>ERISA and employee benefits law<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to independently analyze complex legal issues and provide practical, commercially focused advice.<\/li>\n<li>Strong written and verbal communication skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Preferred<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In-house legal experience within an <strong>insurance company<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Experience supporting a <strong>group health and\/or life insurance business<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with insurance operations, including policy form preparation, agent contracts, underwriting, and related business processes.<\/li>\n<li>Experience advising internal business teams in a regulated insurance environment.<\/li>\n<li>Corporate transactions and M&A experience is a plus, but is <strong>not required<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ideal Candidate<\/h2>\n<p>The ideal candidate will bring deep ERISA and employee benefits expertise combined with an understanding of how an insurance business operates. <\/strong>London based – flexible travel arrangements. Home locations UK wide are encouraged to apply!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">For this position, you will play a pivotal part in the business’s operational delivery, coordinating operational readiness across ALL implementation workstreams. This is a technical position and does not include people management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><strong>Role purpose<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Collaborate with and influence third-party administrators (TPAs) and senior operational managers to deliver new client projects into the agreed operating model.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Support improvements to systems, processes and technology, securing stakeholder buy-in where required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Provide knowledge, experience and oversight across scheme implementation, operational readiness, handover and go-live to support positive policyholder outcomes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Support new business pitches with implementation expertise, including scheme onboarding and operational readiness requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Deliver strong outcomes across capital, profitability, brand, market reputation and policyholder experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Provide oversight and challenge across operational readiness, ensuring risks, dependencies, readiness gaps, mitigations and actions are understood, owned and governed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><strong>Specific accountabilities<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Represent the business in decisions relating to client project delivery, ensuring alignment with the operating model and operational readiness requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Support the Head of Pension Operations in delivering a high level of service to clients and policyholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Work with internal Transition Managers and outsourced administration teams to deliver successful scheme onboarding, with clear ownership of readiness items, risks, mitigations and handover activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Lead the operational readiness workstream, providing governance, oversight and challenge, and escalating issues where go-live readiness, customer outcomes, service delivery or BAU transition may be impacted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Manage project workstreams to onboard new schemes into the operating model, ensuring scheme benefits are understood and specified and data is fit for administration and actuarial valuation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><strong>Required Skillsets<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Defined Benefits pensions expertise – minimum 10 years’<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Strong experience within pensions implementation, <strong>ideally having worked as part of an implementation team previously <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Understanding of end-to-end implementation process, ideally including buy-in to buy-out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Good exposure to a wide range of schemes and understanding of scheme structures<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Former project management experience (or similar role)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Calculation and calculation automation experience is advantageous<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">GMP experience is advantageous <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\"><strong>Soft skills\/ additional: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Excellent communication skills – prior experience <strong>influencing <\/strong>and communicating with stakeholders, TPA providers and wider team members<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Good commercial awareness\/ judgement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">Team: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt\">You will join a growing team complied of experienced individuals.
