Oliver James Dublin are representing a global Life Insurance and investment organisation in their focus to appoint a Head of Underwriting for their Dublin location.
Experience as a Medical Underwriter and/or previous PCF level experience, a strong desirable for the role.
Role Purpose
The Head of Underwriting will be an effective representative for the company with Brokers, external bodies and our reinsurers. They will continually enhance our market proposition, particularly in underwriting value including harnessing advancements in technology.
Note - as this is a Preapproved Control Function role, prior approval of the Central of Ireland is required in order to be appointed to this role and to perform duties as Head of Underwriting. Full adherence to the Central Banks's Fitness & Probity regime is required by the PCF holder.
Key Accountabilities
- Direct the Underwriting function through development and oversight of the underwriting philosophy and ensure regular data analysis provided to reflect the risk appetite of the business.
- Develop and embed underwriting governance culture within the business.
- Deliver a first-class underwriting value proposition that benchmarks strongly in the market and secures competitive advantage, including reinsurance price discounts due to underwriting assurance and receiving consistent accolades from brokers on the underwriting service model.
- Leadership - responsible for the development, and team members (including Team Lead).
- Deliver technical expertise and innovation for product development and claims determination.
- Deliver strategic ideas that understand medium- and long-term market and external environment to continually enhance our market proposition, particularly in underwriting value including harnessing advancements in technology.
- Create and lead service excellence and operating efficiencies - seek to continuously improve service provision and maximise efficiencies.
- Strong profile in the market including engagement and relationship handling with external stakeholders including, but not limited to, industry bodies, reinsurers, medical experts, service providers, regulators and to ensure our interests are fully aligned.
Essential Criteria
- Possess life and disability underwriting qualification, preferably Diploma in Medical Underwriting (Assurance Medical Society) - DMU (AMS)
- Qualified QFA or similar
- Underwriting experience gained at a senior level.
- Detailed knowledge and experience of financial underwriting
- Knowledge of new business processes, underwriting impact on claims and pricing.
- Ability to assess medical conditions and make decisions on the degree of severity.
- Up to date knowledge of current medical underwriting developments/trends/issues.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
- Strong decision-making skills including commercial acumen
- Ability to lead and coach team members to develop a high-performance team and positive work culture.
Desirable Criteria
- Previous approval as a PCF 18.
