The Opportunity<\/h2>\n

Oliver James is partnering with a growing insurance organization to recruit a Director of Accounting.<\/p>\n

You will lead the accounting function, manage a team of approximately four to five professionals and partner with senior finance leadership. This hands-on leadership role combines oversight of financial close, GAAP and statutory reporting with responsibility for strengthening controls, improving processes and supporting financial systems transformation.<\/p>\n

Key Responsibilities<\/h2>\n

  • \n

    Lead full-cycle accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Own month-end, quarter-end and year-end close, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Oversee the preparation and review of GAAP financial statements, statutory reporting and regulatory filings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Partner with group finance and SEC reporting teams to deliver reporting requirements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Lead, develop and hold the accounting team accountable for performance and deadlines.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Establish consistent accounting procedures, strengthen internal controls and drive process improvements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Support financial systems upgrades and guide the accounting function through change.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What We’re Looking For<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • \n

      Strong insurance accounting experience, ideally within life, health or supplemental health.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Proven statutory reporting expertise; experience with NAIC Blue, Yellow or Orange Books is required.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Strong GAAP knowledge and full-cycle accounting experience.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Previous people management experience and a hands-on leadership approach.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Ability to improve close processes and consistently meet reporting deadlines.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Public company reporting exposure and ERP implementation experience are advantageous.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

CPA required. They’re keen to speak with people who have helped organisations navigate transformation, improve risk frameworks and manage evolving regulatory expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The role offers a broad remit across enterprise risk management, governance and regulatory oversight, with the opportunity to work closely with senior stakeholders and influence how risk is managed across the business.<\/p>\n<p>The focus will include:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Improving risk management frameworks and governance processes across the Group.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Supporting senior-level risk discussions and ensuring reporting provides meaningful insight to decision-makers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Contributing to regulatory requirements, including PRA expectations and ORSA.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Reviewing and enhancing risk policies, controls and governance arrangements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Helping deliver change initiatives and ensuring risk frameworks remain effective as the business develops.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I’m particularly interested in speaking with people who have a background in Group Risk, Enterprise Risk Management or Risk Governance within life insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Experience of transformation programmes, acquisitions or post-acquisition integration would be especially relevant. they remain aligned with current regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Work closely with senior stakeholders to advise on regulatory developments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Support the implementation of regulatory changes, ensuring the business remains compliant with its obligations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Act as a key point of contact for regulatory compliance queries, providing practical guidance and support to the wider business.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will need:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p>Strong working knowledge of the FCA Handbook and the UK regulatory framework.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Previous experience within the Insurance Market is essential, ideally within an insurance broker.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Experience managing regulatory change, horizon scanning and policy reviews.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Confidence engaging with senior stakeholders and communicating complex regulatory requirements clearly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A Working closely with local Pricing teams, business stakeholders and technology specialists, you will turn complex data into practical solutions that improve pricing accuracy, customer segmentation and profitable growth.<\/p>\n<p>There is significant flexibility to challenge existing approaches, experiment with new ideas and develop innovative solutions in a collaborative environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Science & Advanced Analytics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop, enhance and deploy advanced statistical and machine learning models to support pricing optimisation, risk assessment, claims forecasting and customer lifetime value.<\/li>\n<li>Improve existing models to deliver more sophisticated customer segmentation and support profitable growth.<\/li>\n<li>Optimise renewal pricing strategies, balancing profitability, market competitiveness and customer outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Design and evaluate predictive models, optimisation algorithms and statistical experiments, including A\/B and multivariate testing.<\/li>\n<li>Translate complex business challenges into practical Data Science solutions, measuring their impact on pricing and business performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Insurance Pricing & Business Partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work closely with local Pricing teams to understand market-specific challenges and identify opportunities for innovation.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge existing pricing methodologies and assumptions, using data-driven insights to influence business decisions.<\/li>\n<li>Support the development of pricing strategies, with a particular focus on motor insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Communicate technical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Technical Leadership & Team Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead a team of approximately 3-4 Data Scientists, with potential for future growth.<\/li>\n<li>Provide hands-on technical guidance, support professional development and foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with engineering and MLOps teams to integrate models into production environments.<\/li>\n<li>Support model deployment, performance monitoring, data and concept drift detection, CI\/CD processes and automated retraining.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to the development of best practices across the Data Science and Pricing functions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What we are looking for<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately 5-7 years of experience in Data Science, advanced analytics or predictive modelling, ideally within insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrable experience in an insurance Pricing environment, with a strong understanding of how pricing decisions affect profitability and business performance.<\/li>\n<li>Strong hands-on Python skills, including libraries such as Pandas and Scikit-learn; experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow is advantageous.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced SQL skills and a strong grounding in applied statistics, predictive modelling and optimisation techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with pricing analytics tools such as Radar, Emblem, Akur8 or Earnix.<\/li>\n<li>Experience developing and deploying models into production, ideally within cloud environments such as AWS, Azure or GCP.<\/li>\n<li>The ability to balance technical depth with commercial awareness and stakeholder engagement.<\/li>\n<li>Previous experience mentoring or leading Data Scientists, or the motivation and capability to step into a formal leadership role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Experience in motor insurance, including rating structures, vehicle scoring, claims cost modelling or demand modelling, would be a strong advantage.<\/p>\n<p>We are open to candidates from different backgrounds.
