A growing life & annuity insurance platform is looking to add an Assistant Controller to its corporate accounting leadership team. This is a highly visible role sitting close to the Controller and broader Finance leadership, supporting both GAAP and STAT reporting across a complex insurance balance sheet.
The business has a strong focus on retirement and annuity products, a modernizing finance function, and ongoing investment in process improvement, systems, and transformation initiatives.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to step into a true controllership role within a fast-evolving insurance environment, with ownership across close, reporting, controls, and cross-functional partnership with Actuarial, Reinsurance, Investments, and FP&A.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes (GAAP & STAT)
- Oversee financial reporting deliverables, including internal and external reporting requirements
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, and flux analysis for accuracy and completeness
- Partner closely with Actuarial, Reinsurance, FP&A, and Investments on financial results
- Support STAT reporting, NAIC filings, and insurance regulatory requirements
- Assist with audit coordination (external audit + internal controls environment)
- Play a key role in SOX / MAR control execution and ongoing governance
- Support transformation initiatives including ERP/reporting enhancements and process automation
- Provide guidance and oversight to accounting team members and workflows
What they’re looking for
- CPA strongly preferred
- 7-12 years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong background in life insurance, annuities, or broader insurance accounting
- Deep understanding of GAAP + STAT (NAIC) reporting
- Prior Big 4 / public accounting experience a plus
- Experience working in a SOX-controlled environment
- Someone who’s hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable in a fast-paced close cycle
Why this role stands out
- Direct exposure to Controller and senior Finance leadership
- Broad scope across reporting, controls, and transformation
- Strong emphasis on modernization and process improvement
- High visibility across multiple insurance operating entities
- Clear opportunity to grow within a scaling platform
