Head of Financial Operations – Insurance Client

Location: Greenwich, CT or New York, NY (Hybrid – flexible remote working)

Oliver James have been engaged to support a rapidly growing and well-capitalized insurance organization with the appointment of a Director / Head of Financial Operations to lead its financial operations function. Reporting into senior finance leadership, this role will oversee the day-to-day execution of core financial operations while helping build scalable processes, controls, and infrastructure to support a growing business.

The role will manage a small team and partner closely with Finance and Treasury to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and efficiency of operational accounting processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the financial operations function, overseeing banking operations, cash management, reconciliations, and accounts payable

  • Manage and develop a small team (2-3 professionals) responsible for daily and monthly operational accounting activities

  • Oversee bank accounts, cash movements, and reconciliation processes, including bank, administrative system, and balance sheet reconciliations

  • Partner with Finance and Treasury to ensure cash activity and related accounting entries are recorded accurately and timely

  • Support the monthly close process, including review of journal entries and reconciliations

  • Establish and enhance financial processes, procedures, and controls to support a growing organization

  • Maintain documentation of operational workflows and internal controls

  • Support external audit and internal control processes as required

  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and automate manual processes

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 10-15 years of experience in accounting operations or operations

  • Experience managing financial operations or accounting teams

  • Strong background in banking operations, cash management, and reconciliation oversight

  • Insurance, reinsurance, or financial services experience preferred

  • Experience operating in a growing or evolving environment is highly desirable

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
