Position Overview - Life Underwriting Rules Specialist (Remote)

A leading life insurance provider is seeking a seasoned professional to join their team as a full-time, fully remote Life Underwriting Rules Specialist. This role focuses on managing, enhancing, and maintaining underwriting automation tools. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in individual life underwriting and a proven track record of building and supporting underwriting rules engines, along with experience in automated and accelerated underwriting environments.

The person in this role will collaborate with underwriters, leadership, technical teams, and external vendors to drive the effectiveness and accuracy of automated underwriting decisions. The right candidate will be analytical, highly organized, and comfortable managing multiple initiatives in a cross-functional setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and ongoing refinement of underwriting automation rules.

  • Work closely with innovation teams to align rule logic with risk strategy and operational needs.

  • Continuously evaluate the performance of underwriting engines and suggest enhancements.

  • Ensure seamless integration of rules with other internal systems and third-party platforms.

  • Coordinate with data, reporting, and technology teams to maintain alignment.

  • Stay informed on industry best practices and trends related to underwriting technology and automation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical, mathematical, or related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in individual life underwriting.

  • 5+ years of experience managing underwriting rules engines or automation platforms.

  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, R) and modern underwriting tools.

  • Understanding of risk assessment methodologies and underwriting principles.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Comfortable engaging with leadership, peers, and cross-departmental stakeholders.

Additional Information:

  • This is an exempt position not eligible for overtime.

  • Remote work environment with standard business hours.

  • Reports to a senior leader within the underwriting or innovation team.

  • Role may evolve with business needs.
