Oliver James have partnered with a leading insurance business looking to hire a senior data engineer that will be expected to build an excellent knowledge of the company products with a deep understanding of how they build and deploy applications.

The position involves understanding the current data stack and data pipelines. This will involve supporting their day to day execution, responding to urgent production issues and assisting other teams. It will also require involvement in identifying improvements and planning their implementation. These could range from simple evolutionary improvements to existing processes and tools to the adoption of a whole new stack.

The senior Data engineer will work closely with, and guide, data scientists, software developers and data analysts on best practice around data prep, storage, transformation, governance and provenance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the PO to understand how best to build new features and support existing capabilities.
  • Understand current complex data transformation pipelines and processes and support these as necessary.
  • Advise on best practices around data technologies in the cloud.
  • Maintain and support the creation of data warehouses in the cloud.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets to meet functional / non-functional requirements.
  • Support defining tools and processes to quality assure our data
  • Design, build, maintain and support high-quality ETL/ELT software components.
  • Work with the agile product team to understand how best to build and deliver new features.
  • Propose and assess solutions to design problems, including identifying and evaluating new technologies and third party components.
  • Feed into architectural standards and best practices, promoting clean code and best practice.
  • Mentor more junior team members, sharing knowledge, experience and best practice

Essential Technical Experience

  • Excellent SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases.
  • Experience in manipulating, processing and extracting data from disparate data sources.
  • Experience building data pipelines and services in the cloud.
  • Core Java knowledge and experience.
  • Strong analytical experience.
  • Ability to elicit requirements from stakeholders across the business.
  • Understanding of fundamental CS concepts (data structures, algorithms, design patterns).
  • Working within an Agile framework.
