Location: New York City (Hybrid)
Base Salary: $125,000 - $150,000

Company Overview

Join a pioneering life and annuity insurance organization committed to transforming how retirement and long-term financial security are delivered. Built on a foundation of advanced technology, modern infrastructure, and a culture of agility, our firm is reimagining insurance to better serve the needs of today's clients. We combine the stability of a financial institution with the energy and innovation of a startup-empowering customers to plan with confidence and retire with dignity.

Position Summary

Our Client is seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented Tax Manager to oversee the tax compliance and reporting functions for the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Tax Manager will lead the development and execution of tax strategy, compliance processes, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory alignment.

This is an excellent opportunity for a tax professional with experience in the insurance or broader financial services sector to contribute meaningfully to a growing and forward-thinking company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the organization's tax operations, including compliance, reporting, tax provision calculations, and internal controls.

  • Prepare and review quarterly and annual tax provisions under U.S. GAAP and NAIC Statutory Accounting Principles, including tax basis balance sheets and supporting documentation for financial reporting.

  • Oversee the preparation and filing of federal and state income tax returns, including extensions and estimated tax payments.

  • Prepare quarterly and annual federal excise tax returns and estimated payments, and ensure compliance with state premium tax requirements.

  • Review tax compliance returns prepared by external CPA firms, and manage the tracking and coordination of all returns, schedules, and deadlines.

  • Maintain documentation for GAAP, statutory, and tax treatments of key positions; assist in developing and updating tax-related policies and procedures.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Controllership, Treasury, FP&A, Legal, and Operations teams to align on tax matters and ensure accurate financial integration.

  • Serve as primary liaison with external tax advisors and regulators; support inquiries, audits, and correspondence with tax authorities.

  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities within the tax function to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related quantitative field; CPA designation preferred.

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm.

  • Demonstrated experience with tax compliance and reporting within the insurance or financial services industry is highly advantageous.

  • Solid understanding of federal and state tax law; exposure to premium taxation a plus.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.

  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial culture with evolving structures and processes.
