Summary
The AVP Accounting Operations will oversee key accounting functions including statutory accounting, general ledger management, investment accounting, procure-to-pay activities, and financial reporting. This role serves as a subject matter expert in technical accounting and plays a critical part in maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening internal controls, and leading process improvements. The position partners with senior leadership across finance, actuarial, operations, and investments while managing a high-performing accounting team.
Experience
* At least 15 years of relevant accounting experience, including public accounting and insurance industry experience
* Strong technical accounting knowledge, including US statutory accounting and familiarity with IFRS
* Prior leadership experience managing teams of 10 or more
* Experience with investment accounting and related reporting systems
* CPA designation required
* Bachelor or master’s degree in accounting or finance
* Expertise in general ledger management, financial close processes, internal controls, and regulatory compliance
* Strong communication, leadership, and process improvement capabilities

Accounting Operations Leadership
* Lead the end-to-end accounting operations function, including general ledger oversight, investment accounting, procure-to-pay, and related accounting processes
* Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial data across all accounting systems and reporting structures
* Manage the chart of accounts, accounting master data, and audit trails
* Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles for key financial statement areas such as investments, accounts payable, accruals, general administrative expenses, fixed assets, premium taxes, and intercompany accounts
Financial Reporting and Compliance
* Ensure compliance with US statutory accounting requirements, regulatory reporting standards, and tax regulations
* Direct the preparation and review of statutory financial statements, general ledger reconciliations, disclosure notes, and other regulatory filings
* Provide analysis, variance commentary, and insights for leadership reviews and board reporting
* Maintain awareness of changing accounting standards and assess their impact
* Act as a key point of contact for external auditors and ensure timely completion of audit activities
Investment Accounting
* Oversee investment accounting processes and reporting for statutory and corporate financial statements
* Support investment data accuracy for IFRS reporting and related disclosures
Technical Accounting and Governance
* Serve as the internal subject matter expert on technical accounting matters
* Support the development, documentation, and enhancement of internal controls, accounting policies, and governance frameworks
* Lead initiatives aimed at modernizing and automating accounting processes and systems
Team Leadership
* Design and maintain an effective organizational structure to meet departmental goals
* Lead, mentor, and coach accounting staff to ensure high performance, professional development, and accountability
* Oversee staffing, hiring, workload allocation, and performance management
