Director, Statutory Accounting

Position Summary

This leadership role sits at the center of statutory financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and insurance-specific tax oversight. The Director will own the end-to-end statutory reporting process across regulated entities, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and full alignment with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and evolving regulatory requirements.

Beyond core reporting, this individual will operate as a technical authority – interpreting new accounting guidance, assessing complex transactions, and translating regulatory change into actionable reporting frameworks. The role also carries direct leadership responsibility for teams spanning statutory reporting and premium tax/state filings.

This position reports directly to the Vice President, Corporate Controller and plays a visible role in interfacing with auditors, regulators, and actuarial stakeholders.


Core Responsibilities

Statutory Financial Reporting & Filings

  • Lead the preparation and submission of quarterly and annual statutory statements, including all required schedules, exhibits, and disclosures
  • Oversee completion of key insurance schedules (e.g., Schedule P, Schedule S) and ensure internal consistency across filings
  • Direct the preparation of financial statement footnotes, interrogatories, and supporting documentation
  • Ensure all filings meet NAIC and state-level regulatory standards with no compromise on quality or deadlines

Regulatory Compliance & Technical Accounting

  • Maintain ongoing compliance with SAP, proactively monitoring regulatory updates and interpreting their implications
  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert on statutory accounting treatment for new or complex transactions
  • Develop and implement reporting requirements tied to new disclosures or regulatory changes
  • Establish and maintain robust documentation to support regulatory reviews and examinations

Premium Tax, State Filings & Assessments

  • Oversee the preparation and review of quarterly estimated premium tax filings and annual returns
  • Direct all state assessment filings and related compliance activities
  • Review and approve accruals tied to premium taxes and regulatory obligations within the general ledger
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and audit readiness across all tax-related deliverables

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and develop a team of 4-5 professionals across statutory reporting and tax/filings functions
  • Drive accountability, performance standards, and continuous improvement within the team
  • Manage timelines, deliverables, and workload prioritization in a deadline-driven environment

Candidate Profile

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA or equivalent professional certification strongly preferred

Experience

  • 4-7+ years of experience in statutory accounting within the insurance sector
  • Exposure to multiple lines of business (e.g., A&H, Life, P&C) is advantageous
  • Demonstrated experience with statutory reporting, regulatory filings, and premium tax compliance
  • Prior leadership or team management experience preferred

Technical Expertise

  • Deep working knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP)
  • Familiarity with NAIC reporting requirements and annual statement preparation
  • Experience with reporting and accounting systems (e.g., SOVOS/eFreedom, Oracle or similar ERP platforms)
  • Strong understanding of insurance financial statements, capital requirements, and regulatory frameworks

  • Strong analytical orientation with the ability to synthesize complex regulatory guidance
  • High level of ownership and accountability in a deadline-intensive environment
  • Effective communicator with the ability to interface across finance, actuarial, and regulatory stakeholders
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and drive process improvements
