Assistant Controller
Work Model: Hybrid schedule (3 days onsite, including Tuesday and Thursday anchor days)
Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Controller to join a well-established Property & Casualty insurance company. This is a key managerial role supporting the Controller and Treasurer, responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting across both Statutory and GAAP entities.
The Assistant Controller will manage a team of four, partner closely with senior leadership, and play a hands-on role across financial reporting, treasury, investments, compliance, and audits. This position offers significant leadership exposure, opportunities for process improvement, and a clear pathway for career advancement into senior finance leadership roles.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Audit

Oversee quarterly and annual financial statement preparation and analysis for multiple entities.

Manage GAAP and Statutory audits, including employee benefit plan audits.

Ensure accuracy and compliance in regulatory filings (including NAIC statements).
Treasury & Investments

Oversee treasury operations, including bank reconciliations, payroll, intercompany transactions, and pension accounting.

Support investment accounting oversight, reporting, and compliance (outsourced but with strong internal collaboration).
Accounting Operations & Controls

Manage and mentor a team of 4 (1 accountant, 1 specialist, 2 seniors), fostering high performance and professional growth.

Maintain effective internal controls, data integrity, and compliance with company policies.

Lead process improvements to enhance efficiency and strengthen financial governance.
Business Insight & Leadership

Partner with senior leadership to provide insights that inform strategic and financial planning.

Review and analyze underwriting results (premiums, losses, commissions, expenses) to support decision-making.

Contribute to tax compliance and regulatory reporting, with the ability to independently research complex regulations.

Act as a key leader within a close-knit finance team of eight, supporting collaboration across a total accounting/finance group of 16.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA and/or advanced degree strongly preferred.

10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within the insurance or financial services industry.

Proven leadership experience managing staff and complex accounting projects.

Strong knowledge of GAAP and Statutory accounting principles; tax accounting knowledge a plus.

Experience with MAR/internal controls, treasury functions, and regulatory reporting preferred.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with general ledger and claims systems is helpful.
