Director, Reinsurance Accounting
Oliver James is currently partnered with a leading insurance organization seeking a Director, Reinsurance Accounting to oversee complex ceded and assumed reinsurance accounting and reporting activities across multiple bases of accounting, including US GAAP, Statutory (NAIC), and Bermuda Statutory.
This role sits within a collaborative finance organization and will partner closely with actuarial, investments, risk, and senior leadership. This individual will play a key role in treaty oversight, transaction onboarding, financial close, governance, and process improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

Lead monthly and quarterly close processes related to reinsurance, including review of journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis

Oversee accounting and financial reporting for complex ceded and assumed reinsurance treaties, including coinsurance, YRT, funds withheld, and retrocession arrangements

Review and interpret reinsurance treaty documentation to ensure accounting and reporting compliance with contractual terms

Prepare analytical reporting and executive-level commentary on reinsurance results and key business drivers

Serve as accounting lead for new reinsurance transactions, including onboarding, modeling, and control design

Develop and maintain standardized reinsurance accounting models and reporting frameworks

Partner cross-functionally with actuarial, investment accounting, and risk teams to ensure accuracy of reserves, deferred gains/losses, and reinsurance recoverables

Establish and maintain governance, controls, and documentation supporting treaty administration, premium settlements, and collateral tracking

Act as a primary contact for internal audit, external auditors, and regulatory examinations related to reinsurance matters

Drive process improvement, automation, and scalability initiatives within reinsurance accounting

Mentor and develop junior accounting staff, providing technical guidance and leadership support

Participate in enterprise-wide projects with cross-divisional financial and operational impact
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field

7+ years of progressive experience within insurance, reinsurance, or public accounting

Strong technical knowledge of reinsurance accounting across GAAP and statutory frameworks

Demonstrated ability to manage complex transactions and operate in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Proven leadership, collaboration, and communication skills

Highly analytical with strong attention to detail and sound professional judgment

Experience with large financial systems (e.g., ERP, financial reporting tools, consolidation systems) preferred

CPA strongly preferred
