Excess Casualty Underwriting Specialist

Position Summary This role is accountable for driving growth and profitability within an assigned broker territory through strategic account ownership and underwriting excellence. Responsibilities include managing a portfolio of new and renewal business across multiple lines, negotiating pricing, terms, and conditions, and ensuring adherence to governance frameworks and global pricing tools. The position serves as a technical lead for Unsupported Umbrella and Excess Liability, while also acting as a training and development resource for underwriters. Success requires building strong broker and client relationships, maintaining accurate documentation, and proactively collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver efficient, compliant, and profitable outcomes.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Responsible for growth and profitability of the Brokers within the Territory.

  • Ownership of accounts including negotiation of participation, pricing, and terms and conditions.

  • Training and development resource for Underwriters & Senior Underwriters.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients.

  • Specialized technical expertise/lead for Unsupported Umbrella & Excess Liability.

  • Manage assigned broker portfolio of accounts to achieve efficient returns of profitability and growth.

  • Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom-line targets.

  • Negotiate price and terms and conditions with producers.

  • Underwrite in line with line of business governance framework.

  • Ensure utilization of global pricing tools.

  • Ensure accurate policy documentation is issued or verified.

  • Maintain comprehensive electronic or paper risk files for each transaction.

  • Proactively develop broker relationships to pursue new acquisitions and strong renewal retention.

  • Manage complex referrals and re-underwrite business as appropriate.

  • Drive cross-functional involvement (Claims, Operations, etc.) in the underwriting process.

  • Participate in cross-regional and cross-segment collaboration activities.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Risk Assessment: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to Umbrella & Excess Liability.

  • Market Management: Analyze performance against benchmarks and apply market/customer needs.

  • Contract Drafting: Design and implement consistent, robust policy wordings.

  • Policy Management: Robust understanding of the policy lifecycle from issuance to credit control.

  • Communication: Effective negotiation and storytelling skills to engage internal and external stakeholders.

  • Influencing: Ability to persuade and motivate others without direct executive authority.

  • Analysis: Ability to examine complex data sets and draw appropriate conclusions.

  • Project Management: Managing multiple accounts and deadlines to maintain market positioning.

Education and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in Underwriting profitable business in Umbrella & Excess.

  • Specialized expert understanding of Liability products and portfolio.

  • Established relationships with brokers within the marketplace.

  • Deep understanding of local and regional insurance markets and competitor landscapes.

  • Familiarity with legal and regulatory frameworks.

  • Experience working in a complex, global matrix organization.

  • Degree in Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, or Business Administration preferred.

  • Professional insurance qualification preferred.
