Role and Responsibilities
- Strategic Legal Leadership: Advise executive leadership on underwriting, claims, product, and distribution matters with business-focused legal guidance.
- Team Leadership: Lead and develop the legal team, promoting a high-performing, collaborative function.
- Corporate Governance: Oversee board support, corporate records, and entity management, ensuring compliance with insurance regulations.
- Risk & Compliance: Identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks, including coverage, bad faith, and market conduct exposure.
- Coverage & Product Support: Counsel underwriting/product teams on policy language, endorsements, and filings.
- Contracting & Distribution: Supervise negotiation and drafting of key insurance-related agreements (TPA, MGA/MGU, reinsurance, producer, vendor).
- Regulatory Guidance: Monitor insurance law and DOI developments to maintain operational compliance.
- Litigation Management: Direct disputes, coverage litigation, and outside counsel strategy.
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate across claims, underwriting, compliance, actuarial, and finance.
Requirements
- J.D. (required) and admission to at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 10+ years within in-house P&C insurance carrier experience (required)
