We are seeking a Senior COBOL Developer to play a critical role in the modernization of a complex legacy platforms. This role will serve as a senior technical authority responsible for guiding the reverse-engineering of complex legacy code-base.
You will focus on the deep analysis & validation of the legacy code, and assist in leveraging AI-enabled tooling to accelerate documentation, business rule extraction, and system redesign.
This is not maintenance work, this is structured modernization and reengineering.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct deep technical assessments of large, complex COBOL codebases (100,000+ lines of code).
- Analyze and document module dependencies across COBOL, SQL, and JCL components.
- Validate AI-generated system assessments and ensure accuracy of business logic interpretation.
- Extract and document business rules using AI-assisted documentation tools.
- Evaluate legacy artifacts and determine what should be reengineered vs. retired.
- Lead the migration of priority reporting assets (approx. 50 reports identified for modernization out of 500 total).
- Support aggregation and restructuring of legacy data for improved accessibility and downstream consumption.
- Contribute to transitioning COBOL workloads to modern toolsets and cloud-enabled environments.
- Assess whether modernization efforts are targeting the correct architectural components.
Skilled Needed:
- 8+ years of hands-on COBOL development experience.
- Strong expertise in:
- COBOL
- SQL
- JCL
- Experience working within highly complex, interdependent legacy systems (100,000+ lines of code).
- Proven ability to analyze and untangle module dependencies across large applications.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems or migrating to new platforms/toolsets.
- Comfort working with AI-based coding tools, code generators, or cloud code environments.
- Strong documentation skills, particularly around business rule extraction.
