In a commercial landscape marred by skills shortage, reticence to invest and an uncertain economic outlook, the UK finance space is facing ambiguous times.
Alyson Andrews, Associate Director of Oliver James’ Finance, Audit, Risk & Compliance division, has noted a pattern of caution within the market. “We are seeing more and more companies merge their finance functions, as well as large businesses moving away from London,” comments Alyson. “Instead, UK organisations are now looking to invest in regions less associated with financial slowdown.”
Areas like the North of England and Home Counties are huge growth markets, while Ireland offers an alternative position on financial passporting, something set to go once Brexit takes effect. Moves to the Home Counties are particularly wise for candidates looking to leave the city – not least because the cost of living is dramatically lower. "As this region grows its share within the FS market, we believe the amount of opportunities will respond in like – and Oliver James will be the ones to facilitate their fulfilment.”
After more than 12 years in the sector, finance is a hallmark of Oliver James, so we are well-placed to support clients within this progressively challenging arena. Three consultants on the FARC team alone have worked together for seven years, developing a strong and interconnected talent network, backed by deep market understanding. Meanwhile, our Northern, European and Irish teams have turned their attentions specifically to companies relocating from London, ensuring we can assist with even the most complex transitional staffing requirements. Looking ahead, we believe statement of work will become a more frequent focus of companies across the space. This is an area in which we are already seeing success, thanks to our recent accommodation of project-led placements and departments in merger.
Candidates can benefit from our extensive client network, which Oliver James consults on to facilitate long and short-term career goals. We have partnered with many businesses on all recruitment needs, enanling us to provide access to top-tier organisations across the North of England, Home Counties and Dublin. What’s more, our expertise across several verticals means we can help people manoeuvre outside the finance remit by putting them in touch with key contacts across related fields.
