Operational Risk and Controls Manager

Specialty Insurance | Operational Risk | Process & Controls

A rapidly growing specialty insurance organization is seeking a Risk & Controls Leader to support the continued buildout and enhancement of the company’s operational controls environment.

This role will partner closely with senior leadership and functional business teams to evaluate end-to-end business processes, identify operational risks, embed scalable controls into workflows, and strengthen the broader governance and controls framework across the organization.

The position is ideal for someone coming from a Big 4, consulting, or internal audit/risk advisory background who has experience supporting insurance clients and enjoys operating in fast-paced, growth-oriented environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and document operational processes and associated risk/control environments across core insurance functions
  • Partner with business and functional leaders to map processes and layer controls into workflows
  • Develop and enhance Risk & Control Matrices (RCMs), process documentation, and controls frameworks
  • Assess control design and operating effectiveness while identifying process improvement opportunities
  • Support remediation initiatives and help implement scalable operational controls
  • Contribute to the continued maturation of governance, risk, and controls infrastructure across the organization
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, underwriting, finance, and leadership teams

Preferred Background

  • 6+ years of experience within Risk & Controls, Operational Risk, Internal Audit, Risk Advisory, or Controls Consulting
  • Prior experience within Big 4 or consulting environments strongly preferred
  • Insurance industry experience required, ideally supporting P&C, specialty insurance, MGA/MGU, delegated authority, or program business environments
  • Experience with process walkthroughs, RCM development, controls testing, remediation validation, and operational/process improvement initiatives
  • Strong understanding of operational and/or financial controls environments
  • Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on within a scaling organization
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, process-driven, and collaborative

Ideal Candidate

This opportunity is well suited for someone who enjoys building and enhancing controls environments rather than maintaining existing frameworks. The organization is looking for an individual who can bring structure, operational insight, and a pragmatic approach to risk and controls within a growing insurance platform.
