[In-House] Senior Managing Counsel – Government & Regulatory Insurance – P&C Insurance [Remote – California]
Our client, a leading P&C insurer, is seeking an attorney to support its regulatory and legislative strategy, with a focus on California. This is a business-facing role working closely with internal stakeholders to shape how the company responds to and navigates an evolving regulatory landscape.
This position sits at the intersection of insurance regulation, business strategy, and public policy, where external engagement with regulators and policymakers is driven by internal business priorities and strategic objectives.
Role & Responsibilities
- Partner with business leaders to develop and execute regulatory and legislative strategy aligned with company objectives
- Monitor and assess insurance regulatory and legislative developments impacting operations
- Translate regulatory changes into actionable guidance for internal stakeholders and leadership
- Support development of policy positions and external messaging tied to business strategy
- Engage with regulators, legislators, and industry bodies (DOI, NAIC, NCOIL) to support company priorities
- Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, trade associations, and external partners
- Collaborate cross-functionally with legal, compliance, underwriting, and broader business teams
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor required; California Bar strongly preferred
- ~8-15+ years of experience in government affairs, insurance regulatory, or public policy
- P&C insurance experience
- P&C insurance regulatory frameworks knowledfe (state DOI, NAIC)
- Experience engaging with regulators, legislators, or industry groups
- Ability to operate in a strategic, externally facing, advocacy-driven role
- Background from carrier, regulator, trade association, or law firm
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: ~$150,000 – $240,000
- Full benefits + retirement
Location & Work Model
- Remote (must be based in California or willing to travel)
- Travel required for in-state regulatory and legislative engagement
