Senior Database Specialist – SQL – Remote with Travel (Europe)
I’m currently working with a major international business who are looking to bring in an experienced Senior Database Specialist to support a critical cloud transformation programme, alongside ongoing operational database ownership across a complex production environment.
This is a senior-level contract opportunity suited to someone with strong hands-on Microsoft SQL Server expertise who is comfortable working across both on-premise and Azure-based estates, driving performance, reliability and modernisation.
The role can be largely remote, with travel expected to Switzerland approximately every 7/8 weeks depending on project needs.
Day to Day Role:
You’ll be involved across both BAU support and strategic project work, with responsibilities including:
- Operating, managing and supporting production Microsoft SQL Server environments across on-prem and Azure
- Supporting cloud migration / handover activity as part of a wider transformation programme
- Identifying and resolving operational, stability and performance issues
- Leading database incidents through to resolution and root cause analysis
- Implementing monitoring, alerting and preventative controls
- Supporting testing, releases and deployment of database improvements through the SDLC
- Working closely with Development, Operations and Business teams on optimisation initiatives
- Advising stakeholders on best practice database design, performance and resilience
- Producing documentation and sharing knowledge across wider teams
- Working with third-party vendors where required
Ideal Background / Skill Set
- Strong senior-level DBA experience supporting live production environments on Microsoft SQL Server
- Proven experience across SQL Server migrations to Azure
- Strong knowledge of Always On Availability Groups, HA / DR environments
- Excellent SQL performance tuning and T-SQL optimisation skills
- Experience monitoring across infrastructure, server and database layers
- Previous experience in high-pressure / business-critical environments (trading, energy, finance etc.)
- Exposure to PowerShell / DBATools / automation highly beneficial
- Experience with SSIS / SSRS / SSAS / Power BI advantageous
- Knowledge of Azure PostgreSQL also beneficial
