Premium Tax Manager
About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established specialty property & casualty insurance organization undergoing an exciting transformation following a recent acquisition. They are seeking a Premium Tax Manager to lead premium tax compliance, statutory reporting, and process integration efforts across the combined organization.
This is a highly visible leadership role that offers the opportunity to modernize tax processes, partner with senior leadership, and help shape the future of the tax function. The position is approximately 75% oversight and leadership / 25% hands-on execution, managing two direct reports while overseeing a third-party premium tax vendor.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead premium tax compliance, including state premium tax filings, assessments, surcharges, and related reporting requirements.
- Oversee quarterly and annual tax reporting, including GAAP and statutory reporting considerations.
- Manage premium tax calendars and ensure timely, accurate filings across multiple jurisdictions.
- Partner with Accounting, Finance, Claims, Operations, and IT to ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance.
- Supervise and develop two direct reports while managing the relationship with an external premium tax vendor.
- Support tax research, planning initiatives, and regulatory compliance across multiple states.
- Assist with SOX controls, internal and external audits, and responses to tax authorities.
- Drive process improvements, automation initiatives, and systems enhancements, including Premium Pro implementation.
- Analyze tax data, perform reconciliations, accruals, and ad hoc reporting for leadership.
- Help integrate tax processes and reporting across multiple business entities while establishing standardized workflows and controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5-10 years of tax or accounting experience.
- 2-3 years of leadership or people management experience.
- Strong multi-state tax experience is required.
- Backgrounds considered include:
- Premium Tax / Insurance Tax (preferred)
- Indirect Tax (Sales & Use, Gross Receipts, SALT)
- Corporate Tax with significant multi-state exposure
- Public Accounting (Big 4 or regional firms) with tax specialization
- Insurance industry experience is strongly preferred but not required.
- Experience managing projects, teams, or third-party vendors.
- Knowledge of GAAP tax reporting and/or statutory accounting principles.
- Experience with tax reporting systems such as Premium Pro, Oracle, or similar platforms is a plus.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with a process improvement mindset.
