A thriving asset manager in LA is seeking an experienced Management Company Controller to join a dynamic Finance & Accounting team. This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial operations of the firm’s management company and helping build a more robust, scalable accounting function.
The ideal candidate will bring 7-12 years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong preference for professionals who began their careers in public accounting and subsequently moved into an in-house management company accounting role within a similar alternative investment environment.
This person will have the opportunity to enhance and professionalize the management company’s accounting infrastructure, processes, controls, and reporting. The firm is looking for someone who can help evolve the function from a primarily cash-based accounting model toward a more sophisticated, accrual-based and institutional-quality finance operation appropriate for a growing investment firm.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the management company.
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial statements.
- Help transition the management company from a primarily cash-based accounting approach to a more robust accrual-based accounting and reporting framework.
- Develop and implement scalable accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Improve the quality, consistency, and timeliness of management company financial reporting.
- Partner with senior leadership and other internal stakeholders on budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and financial planning.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll-related accounting, expense management, and other management company finance processes.
- Coordinate with external auditors and other third-party service providers.
- Evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and workflows as the organization grows.
- Establish appropriate controls and documentation around the management company’s financial operations.
- Identify opportunities to automate and streamline manual accounting processes.
Qualifications
- Around 7-12 years of relevant accounting experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA preferred but not required
- Public accounting experience preferred, particularly early-career experience followed by several years in an industry accounting role.
- Experience within an asset management or a similar financial services environment highly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working with the accounting and financial operations of a management company.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and accrual accounting.
- Experience owning or significantly contributing to a month-end and year-end close process.
- Experience building or improving accounting processes, controls, and reporting infrastructure.
- Strong attention to detail combined with the ability to think strategically about accounting operations.
- Comfortable operating in a hands-on environment and taking ownership of projects from concept through implementation.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with senior leadership, external advisors, and cross-functional stakeholders.
