Director of Accounting | P&C Insurance | Maryland (Hybrid)
We are currently partnering with a well-established, Property & Casualty insurer to appoint an Director of Accounting into their growing finance function.
This is a high-visibility role within a collaborative team, offering clear succession planning and long-term progression into senior leadership. We are open to considering both individuals already working within a carrier seeking a lateral move or a step up into a role with significant career progression opportunity. Equally, we are open to considering individuals in public accounting that have exposure to Insurance clients.
The Business
A specialist insurer operating within the medical professional liability (malpractice) space, providing comprehensive coverage and risk management solutions. Structured as a mutual, the organisation is owned and directed by its policyholders, with a strong reputation for stability and service excellence.
The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the VP of Accounting, this role will take ownership of core accounting operations while managing a team of five. You will play a key role in financial reporting, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and audit processes, while partnering with senior leadership on strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Oversight of financial reporting and general ledger activities
* Ownership of NAIC and statutory regulatory filings
* Management of the budgeting process and variance analysis
* Supervision of Accounts Payable and junior accounting staff
* Coordination of external audits and insurance examinations
* Support senior leadership with reporting, presentations, and business insights
Candidate Profile
* CPA preferred (MBA also considered)
* 7+ years’ accounting experience within insurance or public accounting
* Strong understanding of statutory accounting principles (NAIC)
* Prior supervisory or team leadership experience
* Background in public accounting with insurance exposure also considered
