International Tax Director – Irvine

International Tax Director | Irvine, CA

A career move with a clear path to Partnership

There are public accounting firms where the next step in your career means taking on a bigger title and a bigger book of work. And then there are firms where the opportunity is genuinely about building something – with the autonomy, client relationships and leadership exposure to shape what comes next.

Our client is an established, highly regarded public accounting firm in Irvine with a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture and a strong reputation for delivering thoughtful advice to privately held businesses, their owners and internationally active clients. The firm combines the technical depth you would expect from a leading CPA practice with a more personal, partner-led approach to client service.

As the firm continues to grow its international tax practice, it is looking for an International Tax Director who wants to play a meaningful role in that growth.

This could suit an experienced Tax Director looking for their next challenge, or a strong Senior Manager who is ready to step up. It may also appeal to a tax professional who has reached the point where the larger-firm structure no longer feels like the right long-term fit – someone who wants greater visibility, influence and a genuine voice in the direction of their practice.

The opportunity

You will work with a sophisticated portfolio of internationally connected businesses, individuals and their owners, advising on a broad range of cross-border tax matters. The role combines technical leadership with client-facing responsibility, business development and team development.

Importantly, this is not simply a Director role with an undefined future. The firm sees this hire as a potential future Partner and is prepared to invest in someone who can build lasting client relationships, develop people and help grow the international tax offering.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead complex international tax engagements and provide high-level technical advice.

  • Develop trusted relationships with business owners, executives and other key decision-makers.

  • Work closely with Partners and colleagues across the wider tax and accounting practice.

  • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and develop new business.

  • Mentor and develop talented tax professionals, helping shape the next generation of the team.

  • Have a meaningful influence on the continued development of the firm’s international tax practice.

  • Build the profile, relationships and commercial leadership expected of a future Partner.

The culture

The firm offers something increasingly difficult to find in public accounting: a high-performance environment without the unnecessary layers and politics.

People work closely together, Partners remain accessible, and strong ideas can get traction quickly. There is a genuine emphasis on doing excellent work for clients while maintaining the relationships and culture that make people want to stay.

For someone coming from a larger national or international firm, the difference can be significant. You can bring the technical expertise and standards you’ve developed in a larger environment, while gaining more direct access to clients, decision-makers and firm leadership.

For someone already working in a smaller or mid-market practice, it is an opportunity to take your career to the next level within a firm that has the ambition and client base to support that growth.

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in experienced international tax professionals who combine strong technical credentials with commercial curiosity and a genuine interest in working with clients.

You are likely to be a Senior Manager or Director in public accounting, with significant experience across international tax and a CPA or equivalent professional qualification. Just as importantly, you will enjoy building relationships, developing people and being involved in the wider business of a practice.

You don’t need to have everything mapped out for the next five years. What matters is that you are ambitious, commercially minded and interested in an opportunity where Partnership is a realistic destination rather than a distant possibility.

Why consider it?

If you’re already successful where you are, a move needs to offer more than a different logo and a slightly larger title.

This opportunity offers the chance to step into a visible leadership position, help shape a growing international tax practice and build towards Partnership with a firm where your contribution will be noticed.

For the right person, it could be the point where your career moves from delivering great work to helping shape the future of the firm.
