Staff Software Engineer – Stop-Loss Platform (Remote)

Staff Software Engineer – Stop-Loss Platform | Contract-to-Hire | Remote | No sponsorship offered

We’re partnering with a leading insurance organization on their search for a Staff Software Engineer to help build the next generation of a brand-new Stop-Loss platform.

This is a hands-on, high-impact engineering role. You’ll be one of the first engineers on a greenfield platform, setting technical direction for your business domain, building production-ready software, and working closely with the Director of Engineering and cross-functional partners. You’ll evaluate vendor platforms, decide what to adopt and what to build, and help shape the architecture as the platform takes form. Day to day, you’ll use AI-assisted development tools to work faster and raise quality.

Essential requirements (all are must-haves):

  • AWS: hands-on experience designing, building and running applications on AWS.
  • Vendor management: experience evaluating, integrating, and working with third-party vendors and platforms, including deciding which components to adopt and building on top of vendor products.
  • AI: practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot or Cursor across coding, testing, debugging, and refactoring, and the ability to promote AI-first practices within a team.
  • C#/.NET: current, hands-on experience building production applications.
  • React: experience building front-end applications.
  • Python: practical experience developing in Python alongside the core stack.

Standout experience:

  • Stop-loss insurance experience would be a huge bonus. If you’ve worked on stop-loss products, platforms, or data, we want to hear from you.

What we’re looking for:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of owning and delivering complex, production-grade systems.
  • A senior engineer who sets technical direction, makes sound architectural decisions, and raises the bar for the engineers around them through mentoring and code review.
  • Strong event-driven architecture and microservices experience, including data ingestion pipelines and backend services.
  • Experience designing for sensitive data (PII/PHI) in Insurance, Financial Services, Healthcare, or another regulated environment.
  • Comfort in fast-paced, evolving environments and a solid grasp of engineering best practices for reliable, maintainable, scalable systems.
  • Experience working with contractors or offshore teams is a plus.
  • Someone who is curious, collaborative, open to feedback, and happy to work hands-on rather than only advising.
  • GraphQL and semantic-layer experience are valuable but not essential.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the US. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Owning the technical design and delivery of a business domain on the Stop-Loss platform, from application layer to supporting services and data.
  • Evaluating vendor platforms, determining which components fit, and building on top of them.
  • Designing and building event-driven services, data ingestion pipelines, and backend infrastructure on AWS.
  • Setting engineering standards and mentoring the engineers who join the team as it grows.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Engineering, architects, and cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Helping shape features, platform capabilities, and architecture in a greenfield environment.
  • Using AI-assisted tools to improve efficiency across coding, testing, debugging, and refactoring.

Why this role is different:

You’re joining at the very start of a brand-new platform build, not maintaining a legacy system. You’ll have real influence over the architecture and technology choices from day one, the chance to shape how a new engineering team works, and a clear path to growing with the capability.
