Director of Accounting

Location: Atlanta, GA | Primarily office-based

The Opportunity

Oliver James is partnering with a growing insurance organization to recruit a Director of Accounting.

You will lead the accounting function, manage a team of approximately four to five professionals and partner with senior finance leadership. This hands-on leadership role combines oversight of financial close, GAAP and statutory reporting with responsibility for strengthening controls, improving processes and supporting financial systems transformation.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead full-cycle accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable.

• Own month-end, quarter-end and year-end close, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.

• Oversee the preparation and review of GAAP financial statements, statutory reporting and regulatory filings.

• Partner with group finance and SEC reporting teams to deliver reporting requirements.

• Lead, develop and hold the accounting team accountable for performance and deadlines.

• Establish consistent accounting procedures, strengthen internal controls and drive process improvements.

• Support financial systems upgrades and guide the accounting function through change.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong insurance accounting experience, ideally within life, health or supplemental health.

• Proven statutory reporting expertise; experience with NAIC Blue, Yellow or Orange Books is required.

• Strong GAAP knowledge and full-cycle accounting experience.

• Previous people management experience and a hands-on leadership approach.

• Ability to improve close processes and consistently meet reporting deadlines.

• Public company reporting exposure and ERP implementation experience are advantageous.
