Principal Engineer – Linux & GPFS / Spectrum Scale (Remote)

OJ’s client looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership across the design, delivery, and support of enterprise-scale Linux platforms.

You will play a key role in ensuring the availability, scalability, performance, and security of infrastructure supporting business-critical services. Working across Linux, IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS), and Red Hat OpenShift/Kubernetes, you will lead complex technical initiatives, drive automation and modernisation, and act as a trusted technical authority across the wider engineering organisation, helping to build and evolve the platforms that underpin critical business services.

This is a key technical leadership position with the opportunity to shape infrastructure strategy, modernise enterprise platforms, and deliver resilient technology at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, and delivery of complex, business-critical infrastructure projects.
  • Design and support highly available, scalable Linux platforms across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Administer and optimise IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS) for high-performance distributed storage and data workloads.
  • Deploy, manage, and enhance Red Hat OpenShift/Kubernetes platforms for secure and reliable containerised application delivery.
  • Drive platform stability, performance, resilience, availability, and data integrity.
  • Develop and implement security hardening, patching, and compliance standards.
  • Lead complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis across distributed infrastructure.
  • Drive automation and Infrastructure as Code using technologies such as Bash, Python, Ansible, and Terraform.
  • Partner with application, DevOps, security, and infrastructure teams to align technology solutions with business requirements.
  • Establish engineering standards, best practices, and technical documentation.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership, guidance, and knowledge sharing.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in Linux engineering and administration, ideally across RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux, or similar platforms.
  • Strong expertise in IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS), including architecture, implementation, administration, and performance tuning.
  • Significant experience with OpenShift and Kubernetes, including cluster management and container orchestration.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux performance tuning, monitoring, capacity planning, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with security hardening, vulnerability management, patching, and compliance.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills, particularly Bash, Python, Ansible, and/or Terraform.
  • Good understanding of enterprise networking, including TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, and firewalls.
  • Experience with high-availability and disaster recovery architectures.
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical projects and influence architectural decisions.

Desirable Experience

  • Hybrid or multi-cloud environments, including AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • DevOps and CI/CD practices.
  • Enterprise monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK/Elastic Stack.
  • Relevant certifications such as RHCE, RHCA, CKA, or equivalent.
