Accounting Manager

Oliver James is currently partnered with a distinguished P&C insurer seeking an Accounting Manager to lead a team build-out.

This opportunity combines hands-on accounting, team leadership and collaboration across underwriting, actuarial, reinsurance, treasury and finance operations. The successful candidate will help deliver accurate financial reporting while improving processes and strengthening the monthly close. This individual will be hands-on for the build-out of the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee accounting for underwriting activity across multiple product lines, including journal entries, account reconciliations and transaction processing.
  • Coordinate the accounting close, ensuring financial information is accurate, complete and delivered within reporting deadlines.
  • Support US GAAP and STAT reporting, including data and schedules required for quarterly and annual statements.
  • Review underwriting account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies and resolve outstanding items.
  • Calculate and review profit-sharing amounts payable to distribution partners.
  • Prepare management reports and financial analyses that explain results, trends and key performance drivers.
  • Partner with underwriting, actuarial, ceded reinsurance, treasury and finance operations to address accounting matters and improve data quality.
  • Maintain effective internal controls and documentation, supporting requests from auditors and regulators.
  • Contribute to finance initiatives, identifying opportunities to automate manual work, streamline reporting and accelerate close.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant accounting experience; P&C experience a must.
  • Knowledge of STAT accounting principles and a strong understanding of US GAAP pertaining to insurance accoutning.
  • Experience supporting insurance regulatory reporting and Annual Statement preparation.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to investigate and explain financial discrepancies.
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative approach to working across departments.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate work within demanding deadlines.
  • Experience improving accounting processes and using technology to increase efficiency.
