VP / SVP Finance – Insurance
Chicago | Senior Finance Opportunities
Oliver James is looking to connect with senior insurance finance leaders in Chicago as we support current searches and prepare for clients’ 2027 hiring plans.
We run the Midwest’s largest insurance specific finance recruitment practice, partnering with carriers, reinsurers, MGAs and insurance distribution businesses across accounting and finance leadership.
This posting covers several potential mandates. Our focus is on understanding your experience and what would make a next move worthwhile, so we can keep introductions targeted and relevant.
The profiles we’re looking to meet
Across our searches, clients are placing particular value on finance leaders who combine a strong accounting foundation with commercial judgment and the ability to influence how the business operates.
They want someone who can get into the detail, take ownership of the numbers and work closely with underwriting, actuarial and operations to improve performance.
We’re particularly interested in leaders who bring:
-
Accounting depth: Experience owning financial reporting, close, controls and audit, with the technical grounding to work through complex issues.
-
Commercial finance experience: Responsibility for planning, forecasting and financial analysis, with examples of how that work informed business decisions.
-
Operational influence: Experience working across functions to improve processes, address performance issues and follow decisions through to execution.
-
Team leadership: A track record of developing people, setting clear expectations and building a finance team the business can rely on.
Relevant backgrounds include VP / SVP Finance, divisional CFO, Head of Finance and senior controllership roles with broader finance responsibility. Direct insurance industry experience is central to our focus.
Why connect now?
Demand for FP&A has strengthened over the past year. For broader finance leadership and CFO appointments, however, we continue to see clients favor candidates whose strategic finance experience is supported by firsthand accounting ownership.
The strongest candidates can also demonstrate how they’ve influenced the business beyond finance. Understanding that part of your background helps us identify where you’ll be most relevant – and where an opportunity would offer meaningful progression.
Whether you’re actively considering a move or simply taking stock ahead of 2027, we’d welcome the opportunity to compare your current remit and priorities against what we’re seeing across the market.
Location, compensation and working arrangements will depend on the individual mandate. All conversations are confidential.
